PawSox manufacturing strong season, providing Boston with several key players

Manager Arnie Beyeler may not want to admit it but his Pawtucket Red Sox are in a pennant race. They open a four-game series with International League North leader Lehigh Valley tonight in Allentown, Pa. The PawSox trailed the IronPigs by one game heading into Monday night’s action.
We hear all the time that Pawtucket’s main job is to have replacement players ready for Boston, and the PawSox have succeeded in that department, too. Their “alumni” have played an integral role in Boston’s rise to the top of the American League East this season.

Post 14, Collette Vacations among teams in Legion quarterfinals

Two-time regular-season champion Cumberland Post 14 and red-hot Collette Vacations Post 79 will be among the “Elite Eight” teams that will play for the state championship this week when the R.I. American Legion Senior Division tournament moves into the double-elimination format.
In seasons past, the double-elimination portion of the postseason wouldn’t get under way until four ballclubs were left standing after winning a best-of-three quarterfinal and semifinal-round series.

Fire breaks out in vacant city building

PAWTUCKET — A four-alarm fire broke out on the second and third floors at the site of the former Morris Novelty store, located at 523 Main St., on Monday night, causing every department in the city to respond.
Fire Chief William Sisson stated the blaze began at about 8:15 p.m., and that no one was in the building at the time.

Police team with behavioral health group

PAWTUCKET — The frantic calls can be found almost daily in the police log: a husband “off his meds” and threatening to harm someone, a live-in girlfriend drunk and violently smashing furniture inside an apartment, a teenage son or daughter “out of control” and sounding suicidal.
As always, police officers respond with the intent—as they have been trained--to get the crisis situation under control as quickly as possible.

PAWTUCKET - Maria C. DaCosta) DaGraca, 77, of Pawtucket died July 25, 2011. She was the wife of Antonio J. DaGraca. She was born in Brava, Cape Verde a daughter of the late Alfredo and Adelia (Barros) DaCosta. She came to this country 50 years ago settling in Central Falls.

WEST WARWICK - Marie Batalon, 82, of Main Street, W. Warwick, died peacefully and surrounded by loving grandchildren Scott, Amber, Elizabeth, and Sandra, on July 23, 2011 at West View Care Center in W. Warwick. She was the beloved wife of the late Norman F. Batalon who predeceased her.
She was born in Central Falls, RI on January 30, 1929 the loving daughter of Ovilda and Clara (Roy) Boyer. She had attended Central Falls Public Schools.
Until her retirement many years ago, Marie had been an assembler for the Hillsinger Corp. in Plainville.

PAWTUCKET - Arthur Tattersall, Jr., 85 of Pawtucket died Monday at the Pawtucket Health Center. He was the husband of Jean (Drummond) Tattersall. Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Arthur, Sr. and Grace (Sidebottom) Tattersall, he had been a lifelong resident of Pawtucket.
He was a US NAVY veteran of WWII and was employed for many years as the Regional Sales representative for Nissan Motors. He was a Sports Race Car driver.

PAWTUCKET - Amelia C. DeBurgo, 97, of Pawtucket died July 22, 2011. She was the wife of the late Albert DeBurgo.
She was born in Brava, Cape Verde a daughter of the late Joao and Maria (Galvao)Coelho. She came to this country 36 years ago settling in Pawtucket.
She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
She is survived by 3 sons Humberto DeBurgo of Cape Verde, Arthur and Eduard DeBurgo both of Pawtucket, 1 sister Maria Coelho of Pawtucket, 4 grandchildren, mother of the late Jose DeBurgo, sister of the late Eugenia DePina.

Born in New Haven, CT, a daughter of the late Arthur and Helen (Robertson) Michaud, she resided in Pawtucket before moving to North Providence 27 years ago.
