Lavarnway continues to grow

PAWTUCKET — Greg Grall, the bullpen catcher for the Pawtucket Red Sox, describes Ryan Lavarnway, the catcher, as “raw, which gives him the upside of what he can possibly do. Obviously with his hitting, he’s going to have the potential of playing in any lineup. Now he’s just going to work on continuing to improve his defense. That’s the key.”

Receiver wants retiree cuts

CENTRAL FALLS — State-appointed Receiver Robert Flanders had called it “the Big Ask.”
He invited about 150 retired police, fire and municipal employees to the high school auditorium and asked them to sign on to a proposal to cut the pensions they are living on by as much as 50 percent as well as a health insurance program that would require them to pay 20 percent of their premiums for the first time and co-pay 20 percent of the subsequent costs, including hospitalization.

PAWTUCKET - Denise Green, 62, former Providence head start teacher, of School Street, Pawtucket, died Saturday at Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of the late Douglas LaFrance Sr.
Born in Pawtucket, daughter of the late John and Ann (Ousley) McParlin.
She is survived by daughters Eulanda and Evelyn LaFrance, sisters, Nancy, Sandra, Cheryl and Diane McParlin, God-daughter, Gina Kearns, and 8 grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Richard Allen Gibson and sister to the late John McParlin III.

JOHNSTON - Elza M. (Machado) Marques, 84, of Old Pocasset Lane, passed away Monday, July 18, 2011. She was the wife of the late Francisco Marques.
She was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a daughter of the late Amadeu B. and Maria (da Conceicao) Machado.
