Hoffman fires 73 at N.E. Amateur tourney

EAST PROVIDENCE — There were more than a half dozen birdie putts that either lipped out or just missed the mark. There were two holes that he probably wished he could have had back.
But after an opening round of 3-over 73 at the 82nd annual New England Amateur Championship on Monday, Pawtucket’s Kyle Hoffman was perfectly content with how he shot the ball at the challenging and tricky Metacomet Country Club.

National Park Service looking at three plans

WOONSOCKET — Creating a new national park encompassing the Blackstone River and its tributaries, the historic Slater Mill in Pawtucket and existing historic districts in Cumberland, North Smithfield and two Massachusetts communities is the National Park Service's favored option for replacing the heritage corridor concept.
In a long-awaited report released yesterday, the park service says the continuation of the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor as it currently exists is still one of three options under consideration.

Ground broken for community health care facility

PAWTUCKET — Despite a tough economy, Blackstone Valley Community Health Care broke ground Monday morning on a $6.7 million new medical complex at 33 East Ave.
The 32,000 square-foot building, to be located adjacent to BVCHC's dental clinic at 210 Main St., is scheduled to open in September, 2012. According to BVCHC officials, the three-story medical complex will create a single “medical campus” where a diagnostic laboratory, pharmacy, dental, behavioral health and general medicine will be available to patients under one roof.

CUMBERLAND - Joseph L. Smith, 88, of Ronald Ave. died Sunday in the Mt. St. Rita Health Center, Cumberland. He was the beloved husband of Sheila (Brannigan) Smith.
Born in Cumberland he was the son of the late Fred and Emma (Brown) Smith. He was a lifelong Cumberland resident.
Mr. Smith was a 20 year U. S. Air Force retiree serving during WW II; he had also served during the Korean Conflict retiring as a Master Sergeant. After retirement from the Air Force Mr. Smith began a 20 plus year service with the Cumberland Water Department retiring in 1988.

CUMBERLAND - Arnold Sousa, 86 of Hilltop Road, passed away Sunday in the Grandview Center, Cumberland. He was the loving husband of Esmeralda (Gonzalez) Sousa.
Born in the Valley Falls section of Cumberland, he was the son of the late Cypriano and Theresa (Gomes) Sousa. He was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.
Mr. Sousa was a Life Underwriter for the Boston Mutual Life Insurance Co., retiring 1983. He owned the former Arnolds Market in Central Falls and also worked for four years at the former Owens-Corning Firberglass.
He was a WW II US Navy Veteran.

EAST PROVIDENCE - Yvette M. Andreoni, 86, of East Providence, died Tuesday. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Camille and Marie (Delisle) Gatard.
She had been employed as a photographic retoucher prior to her retirement.
Her son John Mark Andreoni of Lincoln, her daughters, Laurie Andreoni Wilson of CA and Lisa Gefklin of CA, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren survive her. Margaret J. Scuturio, of Washington Street, Central Falls died July 15, 2011. she was the wife of the late Richard Scuturio.
Mrs. Scuturio was born in Providence, the daughter of the late Murdock M. and Bella M. (Couper) Smith.
She is survived by her daughters, Florence Russell and Sarah Gauthier of Pawtucket and her sons Richard W. Scuturio of Pawtucket and Daniel Smith of Massachusetts.

CENTRAL FALLS - James L. Kennedy, "Jimmy" 80, passed July 15th; He was the husband of Jean (Elliott) Kennedy.
Jimmy was the son of the late George and Bertha (Hyatt) Kennedy.
He had been employed by Electric Boat of Quonset for many years.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Nancy Pita and Lynn Robin, a son Kevin Kennedy, two sisters, Rosalie Raymond and Noreen Davignon and 8 grandchildren, he was the brother of the late Anita Silvaggio.
