Upstart Mounties edge Cumberland

PROVIDENCE --- Less than a month ago, reaching the winners’ bracket final of the Division I playoffs was the last thing on the minds of Mount St. Charles Academy and head coach Cliff Matthews.
Not only did the Mounties endure a tough stretch that saw them drop five out of seven contests and fall three games below .500, but also did they lose two of their top players, pitcher Olivia Hendricks and third baseman Nicole Silva, for an extended period of time to an injury and an illness.

Pawtucket to mark 125 years

PAWTUCKET — The city of Pawtucket has a milestone birthday coming up and a committee has come up with a high-tech way to celebrate that would make even Samuel Slater proud.
Pawtucket was incorporated in 1886 and city leaders and a group of business professionals have formed a committee to plan a whopper of a 125th anniversary celebration.
Key to the party will be a Pawtucket Red Sox game on Tuesday, August 23 and a special pre- and post-game show that combines elements of history, music, and dazzling spectacle, and also serves as a fundraiser for the Pawtucket Fireworks Committee.

Mill catches fire from exploding transformer

WESTPORT -Rev. Msgr. Edmond R. Levesque, 82, of Westport died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, June 5, 2011.
He was born and raised in Fall River a son of the late Desire and Elise (Albert) Levesque living in Westport from 1955 - 1983, South Attleboro from 1983 - 1990, New Bedford from 1990 - 2005, and back to Westport in 2005.
Msgr. Levesque was a 1947 graduate of Msgr. Prevost High School and graduated from St. John's Seminary in Brighton, MA in 1955.

WARWICK - Carlos Rafael Mendizabal Gomez 61, died Saturday at Kent Hospital. Born in Guatemala he was the son of the late Carlos Alberto Mendizabal and Sofia Gomez and former husband of Ana Maria Mendizabal.
Mr. Gomez worked as a Tool Maker for the Automatic Machine Co. of Attleboro, MA for 35 years.

PAWTUCKET - Anna E. Ducharme, 79, of Pawtucket, passed away Monday, June 06, 2011. She was the wife of Gerard Ducharme. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Leo Sr. and Anna (Simmons) Biagioni. She is survived by her loving children, Margaret Indell and her husband Kenneth of West Warwick, Dennis G. Ducharme, retired USAF, and his wife Irma of Texas and Walter R. Ducharme and his wife Renee of Cumberland and grandchildren, Keith, Scott, Kaitlyn and Nicolette Ducharme. She was also the sister of the late Phyllis A. Biagioni and Leo Biagioni Jr.

Cumberland's Dionne dazzles at Rhody 5K

LINCOLN – During her four years as a distance specialist for Cumberland High, Hilary Dionne made her mark. It's something that she carried over to Dartmouth College, where she excelled at the Division I level.
Three years later, not much has changed.
Back in the fall, the 25-year-old Dionne broke the three-hour barrier in her debut to the marathon distance. On Sunday morning at Twin River, she also demonstrated she still has some speed in her legs, too.

PAWTUCKET - Jeannette Cunard, 89, died on Thursday at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol. She was the wife of the late George M.Cunard.
Born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Alfred Lussier and Emma (Garneau) Lussier, she had resided in Pawtucket most of her life and was a communicant of St. Mary Church.

CENTRAL FALLS - Armand Bertrand, 63, a longtime Cowden St resident, passed on June 5, 2011.
Born in Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Roger E. and Rita M. (Dube) Bertrand.
He had been employed by Hasbro of Central Falls for 12 years; he then worked for Corning Glass Works, previously GTE and Osram for 25 years.
Armand was a true sports fan cheering all the New England Teams and was also a NASCAR enthusiast. He was a member of the Forand Manor Association.

PAWTUCKET - John M. McGee, a retired Lieutenant on the Pawtucket Fire Department of Pawtucket died Friday, June 3, 2011. He was the husband of Claire (Cote) McGee.
John was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late James P. McGee and Cecilia A. (Doherty) McGee. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and then served his native Pawtucket on their Fire Department where he earned the rank of Lieutenant.
Besides his wife, John is survived by his daughter, Ann-Marie McGee of Pawtucket. He was the brother of the late Raymond and James McGee.

Born in Providence he was the son of the late Filippo and Antonietta (Coia) DiIorio. He moved to Pawtucket in 1955.

CENTRAL FALLS - Therese A. (Girouard) Vincent, 82, of Broad Street, passed away Sunday at home. She was the wife of the late Leo P. Vincent.
Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Napolean and Lena Girouard. She was a life long resident of Central Falls.
She was employed as a super-visor for Hasbro Inc. for over 25 years until her retirement.
She was a life-long communicant of the former Notre Dame Parish. She was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Community Seniors.
