PAWTUCKET — Perhaps 30 minutes before the festivities of Tolman High School's Commencement, Dr. Linda Gifford, a guidance counselor, stood inside the James W. Donaldson Gymnasium offering congratulations to members of the Class of 2011, boys clad in red caps and gowns, the girls in white.
Suddenly, Mckenzie Hosford tapped on her shoulder, and Gifford spun around. When the elder saw Hosford, she immediately gave her a massive hug.
“It's been quite a journey,” Hosford told her.
“With a happy ending,” Gifford smiled back.
PAWTUCKET — Hundreds of firefighters filled the sidewalk along Roosevelt Avenue from Exchange Street to Slater Mill Wednesday, protesting a proposal to privatize the city's rescue service.
Inside City Hall at the time were companies who submitted requests for proposals to do the rescue work. They were there to attend a “mandatory meeting” with city officials to discuss their bids.
Robert Neill, president of the city's firefighters union, IAFF Local XXXX, said the picketing was timed to “discourage those people” and make them aware that the might “run into a possible labor dispute.”

PAWTUCKET — Andrew Miller looked very much like a pitcher who doesn’t belong pitching every fifth day in Triple-A Tuesday night.
With Wednesday signifying the first of two reported opt-out dates — the second occurring Aug. 5 — Miller’s timing couldn’t have worked out any better. The lanky lefthander delivered his finest outing in a PawSox uniform, allowing one run while striking out 10 Charlotte Knights in 5 1/3 innings. He received a no decision as Pawtucket fell in 11 innings, 4-2.
