Alliance, Blackstone River credit unions to merge

PAWTUCKET — There's strength in numbers. That's why the merger of two longstanding and successful credit unions is good news for local residents in this challenging economy.
Alliance Blackstone Valley Federal Credit Union, of Pawtucket, and Blackstone River Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Woonsocket, are merging.
The announcement by credit union officials was made this week, with the legal merger set to take place on Sept. 30.

The cigarette tax debate

WOONSOCKET — James DeForest doesn't have to wonder how much cigarette business he's losing to neighboring Massachusetts. His customers tell him right to his face.
“As it stands now customers verbally discuss how much cheaper tobacco is in Massachusetts,” said the manager of JB Liquors on Social Street.
“They will actually make another stop to avoid purchasing cigarettes in our store.”

Mondy leaving Providence

PROVIDENCE — The first offseason departure has arrived for Providence College as the school announced Thursday that sophomore guard Duke Mondy has been released from his commitment.
Mondy departs after a 2010-11 campaign that saw the Michigan native sit out the final four games of the season. At the time the only thing PC officials said about Mondy’s situation was that it was a "coach's decision." Mondy did appear at Ed Cooley’s introductary press conference in March, telling Blackstone Valley Sports when asked to clarify his situation that, “I’m good, just can’t wait to play.”

Gertrude R. Griffin, 65 died Wednesday at the Philip Hulitar Impatient
Center in Providence.She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Griffin.Born in Pawtucket Gertrude was the daughter of the late Corrine (Ledoux) Swindelles.
She worked as a Behavioral Specialist at the James L. Maher Center in
Bristol until December 2010.
Gertrude is survived by a son; Joseph P. Griffin, Jr. of Foster; two
daughters, Marie Worthington of Pawtucket and Deborah Griffin of
Cranston; two brothers, Edward Swindelles and James Swindelles both of

LINCOLN - Arthur J. Brassard, 93, of Lincoln, died Thursday at Summit Commons, Providence. He was the husband of Diana L. (Berard) Brassard. They had been married 71 yrs.
Born in Central Falls, he was a son of the late Remy and Eugenie (Blain) Brassard and the stepson of Ombeline (Croteau) Brassard. He was a self-employed owner of Spring Water Association and Rent All Inc. Mr. Brassard was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a Staff Sargeant with Company F 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment and a Purple Heart receipient.

LINCOLN - Lois B. (Vivier) Fortin, 74, of School Street, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. She was the wife of Gabriel Fortin. Mr. & Mrs. Fortin were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in July.
Born in Valley Falls, a daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth (Slater) Vivier, she had lived in the Albion section of Lincoln for the past fifty years.
Mrs. Fortin was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church, Albion.
