Tolman unloads on Prout

PAWTUCKET — It’s no secret: Tolman High can hit. And on Thursday afternoon, the Tigers put on a hitting clinic at the expense of one of the Division II’s top teams.
Leadoff batter Alex Lacoste went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in to spark a season-best 17-hit attack and help the Tigers claim their sixth straight contest, a 9-5 triumph over the Prout School in Division II crossover action at Slater Park.

PawSox suffer 15-inning setback

PAWTUCKET – Nobody wants to play extra innings on a chilly afternoon at McCoy Stadium, not when the wind is blowing hard across the outfield and runs are hard to come by.
Thursday was getaway day for the Gwinnett Braves and they certainly wanted to get on a plane and fly back home to balmy Georgia, where the temperature is 30 degrees warmer. The PawSox players wanted to finish the game, too, and enjoy a rare night off.

Solicitor: City can't take back Armory

PAWTUCKET — According to the City Solicitor’s review of the property disposition agreement for the Pawtucket Armory building, it appears that the city does not have a basis for taking back ownership of the historic building.

PROVIDENCE – Supporters of same sex marriage called Rep. Peter Petrarca’s civil unions bill a separate but unequal half measure that renders gay couples as second-class citizens that is an unsatisfactory compromise to marriage equality.
Opponents of same-sex marriage painted it as a Trojan horse that will turn over decisions on the sanctity of wedlock to unelected judges and will compromise the very institution of marriage.

PAWTUCKET - Irene P. Calhoun, 87 formerly of Pawtucket died Tuesday at the Steere House in Providence. Born in Pawtucket she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Laura (Bizier) Jubainville.
Prior to her retirement Irene worked as a Switch Board Operator at the American Heart Association.
Irene is survived by two sons; James Calhoun of California and Rory Calhoun of Pawtucket; a daughter, Tammy Calhoun of Pawtucket; a brother, Ernest Jubainville of Pawtucket and 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

PAWTUCKET - Mildred M. Aveno of Pawtucket died Wednesday, May 11, 2011. She was the wife of the late Frank E. Aveno.
Mrs. Aveno was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Valenty and Josephine(Michonsky) Gnys. She was a nurse's aid at the Memorial Hospital of RI in Pawtucket for many years.
Mrs. Aveno is survived by her children, Francis J. Aveno of Cumberland, Dr. Arlene Aveno of Charlottsville, Virginia and John M. Aveno of Pawtucket. She is also survived by her five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

CUMBERLAND - Eduardo P. Pinhancos, 92, of Prospect St. died Thursday in the Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria C. (Marmelo) Pinhancos.
Born in Linhares da Beira, Portugal he was the son of the late Francisco and Maria (Pires) Pinhancos. He came to this country in 1966 settling in Cumberland.
He was employed by the R. A. Burgeson Construction Co., Woonsocket for many years until his retirement. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Cumberland and a member of the Clube Juventude Lusitana., Cumberland.

PAWTUCKET - Theresa Dawson, 86, formerly of Pawtucket died May 11, 2011. She was the wife of the late Harmon G. Dawson.
Mrs. Dawson was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of the late Dominick and Assunta (Bonini) Garzoli. She was a weaver in the textile industry in Pawtucket for many years.
Mrs. Dawson enjoyed her time with the St. Teresa's Seniors and her Weight Watchers friends.
