PAWTUCKET â€” It seems like a lifetime ago, but it was only four seasons ago when St. Raphael Academy was competing for the Division I championship and Tolman High was joining the fastpitch ranks and looking to build a successful Division III program.
Fast forward to 2011. The Tigers are now one of the Division IIâ€™s top teams. After going 50-3 and winning the 2008 state championship in their three years as a Division III squad, the Tigers made a smooth transition to Division II last season by going 13-7.
PROVIDENCE â€” The three dozen or so businessmen and women who filled the marble staircase of the Statehouse Rotunda Tuesday were quieter, better dressed and more well behaved than most of the demonstrators who regularly assemble there, and they seemed less than comfortable with the whole idea of speaking out and waving signs, but they were just as angry as many of the others who come to that spot to protest.
Sabelle E. Armstrong
PAWTUCKET - Sabelle Elizabeth (Saliba) Armstrong, age 95, of 26 Littlefield St., wife of the late James W. Armstrong, died Sunday April 10, 2011 at home surrounded by her family and friends.
Born April 3, 1916, in Barre, VT, she was a daughter of the late Warden and Annie (Jaffa) Saliba and lived in RI most of her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Catherine E. Thibeault and her son, William J. Armstrong, both of Pawtucket; her grandchildren, Sandra Pelletier and Michael Frenche of Pawtucket; 3 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
William A. Maranda
PAWTUCKET - William "Bill" A. Maranda, 85, of Bellmore Drive, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 11, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Lucille (Champagne) Maranda for 60 years. Born in Woonsocket, a son of the late Ernest and Imelda (Thibeault) Maranda, Bill and his wife resided in Pawtucket over 50 years.
Mary H. Briggs
CENTRAL FALLS - Mary H. "Mikki" Briggs 64, of Central Falls, RI passed away peacefully on the evening of April 9, 2011 surrounded by the love, comfort & care of her devoted family. Mother of Michael Briggs, Sister of George, Raymond, Alfred, Wayne & Marlu Briggs, and Robin Cushman. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Mikki excelled in most sports, and was a talented painter and restorer of antique homes.
Florence N. Kay
LINCOLN - Florence N. "Florrie" (Jarvis) Kay, 81, of Andrews Court died Thursday, April 7, 2011. She was the beloved wife of Nelson E. Kay. Mr. and Mrs. Kay were married for 60 years.
Born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Kathleen (Angell) Jarvis, she had lived in Pawtucket for 50 years before moving to Lincoln 16 months ago.
She was a member of Smithfield Avenue Congregational Church, Pawtucket.
Shirley A. McDuff
PAWTUCKET - Shirley A. McDuff, formerly of Campbell St, Pawtucket and recently of Barrington died April 11, 2011, surrounded by her loving family.
She was the wife of the late William T. McDuff Jr.
Born in Providence, the daughter of the late James and Alberta (Woodard) Ives, Mrs. McDuff is survived by her children; William T. McDuff III of East Providence, Frederic D. McDuff of Warwick, Joan Alexandre of Seekonk Ma, and Penny Herchen of Barrington. Mrs. McDuff also leaves nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
John Peter Hornig
PAWTUCKET - John Peter Hornig, Sr., 70, a self-employed contractor, of North Kingstown and formerly of Pawtucket, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at home. He was the husband of Carolyn (McCormick) Hornig. Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Carl P. and Lillian M. (Silvia) Hornig, he resided in Pawtucket until moving to North Kingstown five years ago. John enjoyed gardening, boating and fishing.
CENTRAL FALLS - Amanda Salinas, 82, of Mary Street peacefully passed away on Tuesday surrounded by her loving children. She was the wife of the late Pastor Mariano Salinas.
She was born in Valdivia, Antioquia, Colombia, a daughter of the late Jesus M. Peneda and Ana Teresa Quiros. She and her family moved to Rhode Island several years ago.
She leaves a son Edgar Alvaro Salinas of Pawtucket, 2 daughters, Nancy Beltran of Florida and Edith Diosa of No. Providence; 8 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren.
PROVIDENCE â€” The new school funding formula passed by the General Assembly last year has been hailed by educators, public officials and parents as a vast improvement in the way Rhode Island pays for its public schools. But at least two local communities claim it is inadequate to the point of being unconstitutional because it shortchanges poorer school districts.
Nelson H. Rene, Jr.
PAWTUCKET - Nelson H. Rene, Jr., 75 of Pawtucket died Saturday at Orchard View Nursing Home in Riverside. He is the beloved husband of Louise (LeFrancois) Rene. Born in Pawtucket, Nelson was the son of the late Nelson Rene and Anna (Solotki) Rene. He was a lifelong resident of Pawtucket.
Nelson served in the Army in the Korean War and was a Social Worker for the Department of Children Youth and Families for 4 years until his retirement.
SPC Dennis Cullen Poulin
PAWTUCKET - SPC Dennis "Danny" Cullen Poulin, 26, passed away surrounded by his parents, son and aunts on Thursday, March 31, 2011 in Landstuhl, Germany, from injuries sustained on March 28th in Konar Province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He was a Mortarman with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment of the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
Delores A. Daviau
PAWTUCKET - Delores A. (Lanois) Daviau 76, of Grand Ave, passed peacefully with her family by her side on April 10th. She was the loving wife of 45 years to Joseph Daviau. Born in Pawtucket, Delores was the daughter of the late Albert and Grace (Elderkin) Lanois Sr.
She had been employed by the former Carties Health Center for many years and also worked at Grandview Nursing Center.
