PAWTUCKET â Cumberland resident Jocelynn White will never forget one of her first assemblies as a âBooks Are Wingsâ volunteer.
Two years ago, she and President Monique Renaud â also White's aunt â decided to bring in a professional storyteller to read to children during a âBAWâ Book Party at the city's Fallon Elementary School.
After the duet had given to students the books of their choice, she was stunned at her observation.
PAWTUCKET - Margaret Lima of Armistice Blvd, Pawtucket died March 13, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Clara (Fernandes) Lima.
Miss Lima is survived by her sister Pearl Rose, her nephews John Pina, John O'Connor and Steven O'Connor, and her nieces Clara Perry and Ruth Collins.
There will be a funeral service for Miss Lima Friday, March 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket.
ATTLEBORO, MA- Alfred Whittaker, 90, of Attleboro, MA, formerly of Fall River, MA passed away on Wednesday March 16, 2011 at the LifeCare Center in Attleboro. He was the husband of the late Juliette (Meyrelles) Whittaker.
PAWTUCKET â Freddy Gobewole is making a name for himself in this city, first as an all-state football player for Shea High last autumn and then as the New England high school indoor track champion at 55 meters.
PAWTUCKET â A fire heavily damaged a two-family house at 747 Main. St. on Monday night and displaced six tenants.
Fire Capt. Steven Parent, the city's fire marshal, said the call came in at around 9:30 p.m. He said the blaze apparently started on the third floor of the two-family house in an area that functioned partly as an attic and also contained bedrooms that were part of the second floor apartment. He said the fire burnt a large section of the roof and caused damage to the third floor.
Katherine M. Aldsworth
PAWTUCKET - Katherine M. Aldsworth 86, formerly of Sisson St, Pawtucket, passed March 14th at the Waterview Villa.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late John J. Aldsworth Sr. and Catherine (Noonan) Aldsworth.
She had been employed as an Operator by the former AT&T for over 30 years. Katherine was a member of the AT&T Telephone Pioneers and a longtime Communicant of St. Mary Church.
She is survived by a nephew, John J. Aldsworth III of Seekonk, and two great nieces, Casandra Aldsworth of Berkley, CA and Colleen Aldsworth of Seekonk and her daughter Madison.
Fernando Rodrigues Gomes
CUMBERLAND - Fernando Rodrigues Gomes, 74, of Cumberland Street, passed away Tuesday in the Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Maria A. (Nunes) Gomes.
Born in Pedrogao Pequeno, Portugal he was the son of the late Manuel and Beatriz (do Carmo) Gomes. He came to this country in 1973, settling in Cumberland.
Mr. Gomes was employed by the RI Textile Company of Pawtucket for 4 years, previously employed by the former Royal Electric Company for 20 years.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
PROVIDENCE â Keno Davis never failed to mention that Providence College featured one of the youngest menâs basketball teams in the Big East, if not the country. PAWTUCKET â The Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket is embarking on a $6 to $7 million expansion plan for its facility on Moeller Place, thanks to the City Councilâs approval of a land conveyance request.
On Wednesday, the City Council voted 8 to 0 to approve a resolution to convey about a 9-acre portion of the 20-acre city property adjacent to the Boys & Girls Clubâs existing facility off School Street to the organization for the sum of one dollar.
BURRILLVILLE - Simonne Poulin, 84 resident of Mapleville, died March 12, 2011 at the St. Antoine Residence in No. Smithfield.
Loving wife of 27 years to Roland Poulin.
Born in Albion RI, a daughter of the late Albert & Marie (Auger) Benoit.
She worked for the H&H Screw Co. in Lincoln; previously she worked for the Hasbro Co. A resident of Burrillville for many years previously she lived in Central Falls.
Carlos A. Oliveira
PAWTUCKET - Carlos A. Oliveira, 86, of Pawtucket, died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Deolinda (Cardoso) Oliveira. They had been married 60 years.
Born in Portugal, he was a son of the late Inacio and Georgina (Silva) Oliveira. Mr. Oliveira was employed as a machine operator for American Insulated Wire Co. until his retirement. His daughter Lucia Dennis of New Snyrna, Fl, his son Jose Oliveira of S. Attleboro and his grandchildren Justin Oliveira, Amber Dennis and Danielle Dennis survive him.
Ruth R. Phillips
WARWICK - Ruth R. (Hinchcliffe) Phillips, 82, of Warwick and formerly of Pawtucket, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert D. Phillips.

PAWTUCKET - Sgt. Adrian Silva, Pawtucket Police Department (Ret.) of Prospect St, Pawtucket died March 13, 2011. He was the loving husband of Thelma (Williams) Silva.
Robert R. Bourget
WOONSOCKET: Robert R. "Bob" Bourget 64, passed March 12th surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Woonsocket, a son of the late Gerald and Jeanne (Poirier) Bourget.
He had been the proprietor of Bobby B's auto repair for many years before retiring and had also worked at the Moshassuck Cemetery. He was an avid outdoorsman,enjoying hunting and fishing. Bob was a proud Veteran of the Vietnam War.
David B. Richards
PAWTUCKET - David B. Richards, 45, of Pawtucket, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, March 10, 2011 at home.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of Barbara Richards of Pawtucket and the late Raymond Lugiski.
Gary P. O'Brien
PAWUCKET - Gary P. O'Brien, 56, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Born in Providence, a son of the late Daniel N. and Margaret (Tahney) O'Brien, he resided in Pawtucket most of his life. He was a member of the 1972 graduating class of St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket, where he excelled in athletics. Gary served as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy. He was a talented carpenter his entire adult life and was currently working for Colony Builders of Rehoboth.
SMITHFIELD - Jean Pierson, 83, of Smithfield and formerly of Pawtucket passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011. She was the wife of the late Marcel Pierson.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Leapha (Purdy) Fogarty.
Mrs. Pierson worked at the Pawtucket Times as a Switch Board Operator for over 20 years before retiring. She also worked at the Checker Club in Pawtucket part time for over 40 years.
Helen B. Nowak
LINCOLN- Mrs. Helen B. (Kopacki) Nowak, 90 died Tuesday March 8, 2011. She was the widow of Joseph A. Nowak, who died June 9, 1989.
Born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Kazimierz and Adela (Irzyk) Kopacki, she was a 1937 graduate of Woonsocket High School.
Mrs. Nowak was employed as a floor lady at the former Najarian's Department Store both in Woonsocket and Pawtucket.
She also worked at the former Gracious Living in Cumberland and at Ann & Hope in Cumberland. She was a Lincoln resident since 1953.
Joseph L. McDonald Jr.
PAWTUCKET - Joseph L. McDonald Jr., of Pawtucket, died March 11, 2011. Mr. McDonald was the husband of the late Gladys L (Bibby) McDonald.
He was born in Providence, the son of the late Joseph L. McDonald Sr., and Edna M. (Johnson) McDonald-Scanlon.
Mr. McDonald was a paper cutter for many years before retiring. He was a United States Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War.
As a youth Mr. McDonald excelled in baseball and track and field, receiving an invitation to try out for the former Boston Braves Major League Baseball Team.
