City's NECAP test results a mixed bag

PAWTUCKET — Results of the latest standardized tests, known as the NECAP, that were administered to students last October in grades 3-8 and 11 show some encouraging gains in reading and mathematics, particularly at the high school level. Yet, at the elementary and middle school levels, statewide results show little or no significant changes overall, and Pawtucket's results generally mirror this trend as being a mixed bag.

Fallon Elementary wins prestigious nutrition award

PAWTUCKET—Homemade muffins, mango slaw, chicken lo mein and tabouli are a far cry from typical school lunch fare. Yet, offering more healthy and creatively fun food choices has helped earn eight city elementary schools a prestigious nutrition wellness honor from the United States Department of Agriculture.
In a ceremony held at the Fallon Elementary School on Thursday, representatives from the eight schools received “HealthierUS Awards” from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is one of the nation's highest school nutrition awards as part of the USDA's “HealthierUS School Challenge.”

Hoop roundup: Tolman and CF win, Shea loses

PAWTUCKET – After a close first half with Division II-North rival Lincoln High on Friday night, Tolman after the break and cruised to a 64-37 win on Senior Night at the Donaldson Gymnasium.
The Tigers held a scant 23-21 lead over the Lions at halftime. Spurred by a strong bench and senior teammates Eli Wiggins and Jeremy Graca, Tolman essentially put the game out of reach by opening the latter half with a dominating 22-6 run.

Saints edge Townies, 65-62

PAWTUCKET – Tom “Saar” Sorrentine will be the first to inform you that his St. Raphael club has been struggling lately, particularly on the defensive end. His concerns reflect the recent turn of events, as SRA entered Friday’s clash with playoff-starved East Providence High in fourth place in the Division I standings after beginning the week in first.
