PAWTUCKET â€“ The ushering in of a new boysâ€™ basketball season means the arrival of two high school tournaments geared towards preserving the memories of a pair of legendary city coaches.
CENTRAL FALLS â€“ Central Falls dedicated its latest Navigant Tip-Off Tournament championship to former coach Joe Handy.
â€śWe wanted to get this one for Joe,â€ť said new C.F. coach Nick Lafreniere on Tuesday evening after his Warriors rolled to a 38-24 victory over Davies Tech in the tournament final. â€śJoe was a mentor and a friend to me and a great coach. I talked to him on the phone today and told him we wanted to win for him.â€ť
CENTRAL FALLS â€” When Battalion Chief Keith Sullivan received the call at approximately 4 a.m., Tuesday, he walked to the dormitory area of the Central Falls Fire Department and announced to several colleagues their beloved chief â€” Rene R. Coutu â€” had died at the age of 60.
â€śEverybody got up, and one firefighter immediately went outside and lowered the (American) flag to half-staff,â€ť Sullivan said sadly. â€śThe others just walked around. It actually was very quiet.â€ť
CUMBERLAND - Anita Valliere died on December 2 under the loving care of her sister Yvonne and husband Robert at their home in Coventry, RI after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Notre Dame Cemetery, 359 Daggett Ave., Pawtucket, RI at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 9. A reception will immediately follow at Cantina DiMarco, 405 Mendon Rd., Cumberland.
Althea E. Thompson
Cumberland - Althea E. (Fowler) Thompson, 94, of Old Diamond Hill Road died Sunday, December 5, 2010 at Emerald Bay Manor, Cumberland. She was the wife of the late Earl N. Thompson.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Harris E. and Emma (Brown) Fowler, she had lived in Cumberland for the past 45 years.
James A. Riley
PAWTUCKET - James A. Riley, 79, of 422 Armistice Blvd. passed away Saturday,December 4, 2010. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Patrick J. and Margaret C. (McSally) Riley.
Mr. Riley was a US Navy Veteran serving during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He is survived by two sisters, Barbara Fleury and Joan Daley both of Pawtucket; a brother, Dennis Riley of Little Compton; a cousin, Margaret Silva of Pawtucket; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was also the twin brother of the late William Riley.

PAWTUCKET - Marie M. (Glenn) Madden, 95, of Old Diamond Hill Road Cumberland, formerly of Ferncrest Drive, Pawtucket, passed away Saturday at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. Marie was the wife of the late Jean D. Madden, Sr. for 72 years. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Marie was a daughter of the late Matthew T. and Margaret (Burke) Glenn.
